2015 Men's Fall Racing Recap

The Crusader Varsity has capped their fall racing season and will turn indoors to the confines of the Field House as the weather takes a turn for the bitter. A look back at the fall season:

The Crusader V8+ saw early success against a strong WPI squad as well as New England challengers Tufts, Bates, UMass and UNH. This is the sixth year in a row that the Crusaders have taken home the Quinsigamond Snake title. The second and third varsity boats finished within five seconds of one another on the home course.

As an added event to this year’s festivities, the Holy Cross Alumni 8+ took home the gold, featuring TJ Zaleski ‘12, Eddie Evans ‘05, Anthony Curro ‘14, Mike Faron ‘84, John Burke ‘15, Nick Whalen ‘15, Pete Dwyer ‘12, and Paul Gaffney ‘13.

A second Alumni 8+ also raced, edging out the UMass alumni boat, the “Aging Aggies”. The Alumni “B” entry consisted of Jordan Traub ’13, Chris Schutlz ’02, Conor Faron ’15, Rick Savage ‘84, Arthur O’Brien, Jim Shea, Kyle Larkin ’15, Zack Zaniewski ’15, and Ryan Hallisey ’13.

The Crusaders’ first and second varsity saw action again at the 51st Head of the Charles Regatta. The second boat took 24th in a competitive field of 40, edging out Bucknell, Fairfield, George Mason, and the Georgetown entry in the event.
Holy Cross’ finest took the course on Sunday for the Collegiate 8+. The 8+ bobbed and weaved from a 29th starting position to come in 15th place after a five-second penalty was assessed on the challenging Charles course.
During the Men’s team off-week, the Friends of Holy Cross Men’s Rowing took to the Schuylkill River at the Head of the Schuylkill regatta, taking 19th place in the Alumni event.

The Crusader varsity squad formally ended their season with a 28th place finish at the Princeton Three Mile Chase on Carnegie Lake. About the fall season, Head Coach Jim Barr said “While the Head of the Charles and the Chase were not great showings of our true speed, we finished up our on the water fall with some exciting results [against Trinity and Dartmouth]… Looking at fitness results this fall we are very optimistic looking forward to our spring races. Each month in the fall we test 6k on the ergs to have a team wide bench mark for fitness to judge our training plan. Comparing results from this time last year we are doing very well--[with the] Top 8 [boat erg scores] sixteen seconds on average faster than last fall [and] team average five seconds faster than last fall.”

The Holy Cross novice squad took to the frigid waters of the Connecticut River to take 11th at the Green Monster Invitational Regatta.

The Varsity did not take the weekend off from competition as Holy Cross hosted traditional New England rival Trinity, the 1V and 2V scrimmaging a short six days after the Princeton Chase. Holy Cross swept the Bantams with the smallest margin still being open water, a marked improvement over the results from the Head of the Charles Collegiate 8+ only a few weeks before, where the Bantams bested the Crusaders. The following day, the top 12 oarsmen from the Hill suited up to scrimmage the Dartmouth Big Green following the conclusion of the Green Monster Invitational. Over the course of several pieces, Holy Cross wound up in a bitter battle for inches, with 2007 HC graduate Al Monte’s boys never pulling away to open water.
